In an Al Jazeera interview, Michael Fakhri, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, stated Israel’s starvation campaign in Gaza has entered its “most horrific phase”, with 19 famine deaths in 24 hours.
He cited Netanyahu’s 78-day total aid blockade and subsequent weaponisation of food distribution as deliberate tactics, confirming Gaza meets all humanitarian criteria for famine.
Fakhri emphasised starvation constitutes a war crime under existing ICC warrants against Israeli leaders, creating binding obligations for states to intervene – obligations ignored for 20 months since Israel’s October 2023 declaration of intent to starve Gazans.
He condemned the US and Israel-backed “Gaza Humanitarian Foundation” as a military deception baiting civilians into “death traps”, noting UN agencies had unanimously opposed the scheme pre-implementation.
Fakhri urged General Assembly-mandated peacekeepers to protect aid convoys, bypassing US Security Council vetoes, while warning Israel’s endgame remains annexation through engineered famine.
Fakhri concluded with his condemnation of global complicity in normalising this systematic deprivation, where children’s deaths now evidence complete social collapse under Israel’s 20-month siege.
