The Israeli army says it has started the first part of an operation to seize Gaza City as air strikes hit heavily populated areas of the city.
Israel has called up tens of thousands of reservists for the operation which intends to force out nearly a million Palestinians.
The Israeli military says troops are already on the outskirts of the city.
Residential areas of Gaza City are experiencing heavy bombardment.
