Neighbour of Alex Pretti criticises ICE tactics in Minneapolis as aggressive escalation

The US border chief Tom Homan says he is working on making ICE operations in Minneapolis ‘safer and more efficient, by the book.’
The killing of two US citizens, Alex Pretti and Renee Good, by federal immigration agents in the city has sparked outrage and is now raising the possibility of a partial government shutdown.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Jeanne Massey, a local resident and community outreach worker who was a neighbour of Pretti, said Pretti — a 37‑year‑old intensive care nurse — was shot by a federal agent, and many residents have little faith in Homan’s proposed de‑escalation plan. “Everyone I know feels this plan won’t change anything,” Massey said. “The fear in our community is real and constant. Families are terrified every single day, even if they’re US citizens.”

She described ICE operations as “militarised, aggressive, and completely out of control,” adding, “They kept the scene after the shooting, and the more the community came to bear witness, the more they escalated. They tear‑gassed us while we were standing in solidarity with our neighbour.” Massey highlighted the growing role of local groups in response to the crisis: “We are showing up for each other, making sure people have food, can get to work safely, and that children are protected. This isn’t about confrontation — it’s about community power and care.”

As soon as Donald Trump made his comeback to the White House early last year, he rushed to step up his crackdown on those who enter the country illegally.
His administration soon started mass arrests and mass deportations.
That’s led to mass protests against Trump’s immigration policies.
Protesters are particularly venting their anger against Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, accusing them of using excessive force.
And the state of Minnesota has become the epicentre of the anger against the crackdown in recent weeks.
There have been at least three shootings there involving immigration agents just this month alone–two of them fatal.
So, does this violent crackdown serve any real purpose?

One year into his second term, United States President Donald Trump is testing the outer limits of executive power. From the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to threats towards Iran and efforts to secure control of Greenland, the administration has plunged the US into turbulent territory.

Domestically, the Trump administration is enforcing hardline immigration policies. Documented reports of expanded anti-immigration operations – along with allegations of racial profiling and detentions affecting even US citizens and legal residents – have many communities on edge.

Adding to this, a shaky economy has many in the US questioning Trump’s policies as his approval ratings plummet before November’s midterm elections.

This week on UpFront, Marc Lamont Hill speaks with Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor and publisher of The Nation magazine, about Trump testing the limits of his executive power and what this could mean for the rest of his presidency.

In an Al Jazeera interview, legal scholar Claire Finkelstein says the killing of Alex Pretti by ICE agents raises serious questions about gun rights and the use of force.
She notes Pretti legally owned and carried the gun under Minnesota law, which is constitutional under Supreme Court precedent.

Finkelstein says a key issue is that Pretti had reportedly been disarmed before he was shot.
It remains unclear whether the officer who fired knew the weapon had been taken.
She argues this uncertainty makes a full investigation essential.
Finkelstein says the case exposes a constitutional dilemma for conservatives and gun lobbyists.
She warns that exercising Second Amendment rights may place civilians at grave risk.

Investigators probe motive in National Guard shooting near White House

Investigators in Washington, DC are working to determine the motive behind a shooting that left two members of the West Virginia National Guard critically injured.
The attack, described by authorities as a “targeted ambush,” occurred on Wednesday near a busy metro station, just three blocks from the White House.
The suspect was swiftly taken into custody, but questions remain about the circumstances leading up to the incident and whether others were involved.
The shooting prompted a temporary lockdown of the White House and Treasury Department, adding to tensions on the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday.
The deployment of National Guard troops in the nation’s capital has been a point of contention, following orders earlier this year to address what former President Donald Trump described as a “major crime wave.”

The presence of over 2,200 troops from multiple states remains divisive among residents.
Federal investigators are treating this case as an assault on law enforcement officers, raising the stakes for their ongoing inquiries.
Trump says the suspect arrested over the shooting is from Afghanistan.
Immigration authorities have indefinitely halted processing all requests related to Afghan nationals.
