Florida born Dermer rose to prominence as a political campaign consultant, initially for republican senators and later for Benjamin ‘Netanyahu’ Mileikowsky.
Dermer has been the closest confident of Mileikowsky throughout his political career. While ambassador in 2015, Dermer was censured by the Israli Civil Service Commission for promoting Mileikowsky’s re-election. Mileikowsky Considered Dermer a potential successor in a 2019 report.
While appointed as Strategic Affairs Minister, at the beginning of the 2023 genocide, Dermer was tasked by Mileikowsky with designing plans to “thin” the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip “to a minimum”.
His personal relationships to both Trump and Mileikowski during his time as Israeli Ambassador to the US cemented his role as middleman between the US and Israeli regimes.
His Ambassadorship was spent pushing for US military funding and diplomatic support for Israeli occupations.
Under Obama in 2016, he secured for Israel a $38 billion military support deal, the largest of its kind for the time. During the first Trump presidency, he secured US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in 2017 and of Israeli soverignty over the occupied Golan Heights in 2019.
In 2024, as Minister, Dermer labelled the allegations that Israel had pursued a strategy of starving Palestinians, “false and libellous” and blamed Hamas for “stealing food and putting civilians in harm’s way”.
He backed Peter Dutton’s suggestion that the Australian government cut ties with the International Criminal Court (ICC) and called for other nations to do the same if the charges of war crimes against Israeli leaders were not dismissed.
