Women and girls ‘suffer triply’ in Gaza: UN
12,381 views Apr 16, 2025 #IsraelPalestineWar #GazaWar #Israel
Women and girls in Gaza “suffer triply”, says the UN Population Fund regional director for Arab states, Laila Baker.
“They suffer with their own health – with many of the health facilities and the infrastructure almost completely brought to a halt, … with medication and supplies being denied. Their malnutrition is also at risk, and they also are the caretakers for their families, so they put their own health and wellbeing aside,” Baker told Al Jazeera from Cairo, Egypt.
She said pregnant women are finding it difficult to find a medical facility as well as safe access to it due to Israeli attacks.
“Even if they could get there, would there be a professional? Will there be aid? Will there be medication? Can they get back to their place, a tent, a displacement centre, safely? … Will that newborn actually survive the conditions in Gaza with food, water, shelter being in such limited supplies?” Baker asked.
Still, the women and girls she has spoken to in the besieged enclave have “tenacity” and “commitment”, Baker said.
“What I got from those women was … that they were proud to be Palestinian women and to live in their country and to remain, to be able to be steadfast and remain on the Palestinian land.”
Gaza is a post-apocalyptic killing zone: UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini | UpFront

It’s been almost a month since Israel broke the ceasefire agreement with Hamas, launching daily strikes across Gaza that have killed more than 1,100 Palestinians. Humanitarian aid has also been blocked from entering the area by Israel for more than a month, deepening the crisis.
Humanitarian workers have also been directly targeted. Since October 7, 2023, more than 400 aid workers have been killed – nearly 300 of them were staff members with the United Nations’ Palestinian relief agency, UNRWA.
So, what’s needed to ensure justice and accountability for the victims of war crimes? And what is the situation on the ground in Gaza?
This week on UpFront, Redi Tlhabi speaks with UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini.

Total blockade of Gaza to have ‘disastrous impact’: UN emergency relief coordinator
15,056 views Mar 19, 2025 #IsraelGazaWar #GazaCeasefire #GazaWar
Tom Fletcher, the UN emergency relief coordinator, briefed the Security Council on the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territory, expressing deep distress over Israel’s total blockade since 2 March, which has cut off food, medicine, fuel, and cooking gas for 2.1 million people.
He condemned the “systematic rejection” of repeated requests to access aid at Kerem Shalom Crossing, leaving supplies to rot and expire, and described the blockade as “unconscionable” and a violation of international humanitarian law.
Fletcher warned of catastrophic consequences as essential supplies are rationed, food prices soar, and public health risks escalate due to overcrowding and poor sanitation.
He contrasted this with the 42-day ceasefire, during which aid delivery surged, hostages were released, and humanitarian operations effectively scaled up, but lamented that the return to hostilities has reversed this progress, leaving civilians in “abject fear.”
Fletcher urgently called for three actions: allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza, renewing the ceasefire to protect civilians and release detainees, and securing adequate funding for the humanitarian response, which is only 4% resourced.
He also raised grave concerns about settler violence and displacement in the West Bank, where 95 Palestinians, including 17 children, have been killed this year.
Closing with a poignant message from a Gaza doctor who was later killed—”Whoever stays until the end will tell the story.
We did what we could. Remember us”—Fletcher challenged the Security Council: “Will we be able to say that we did what we could?”

Riyad Mansour, Palestine’s envoy to the UN, has demanded the Security Council act to protect civilians enduring more than a year of Israel’s attacks. “Israel has crossed every red line, broken every rule, defied every prohibition. When is enough really enough? When are you going to act? You are the Security Council. You have to reach every single one who is in pain among the Palestinians. That is your duty,” the envoy said at a council meeting. Besides the 43,000 people killed in Gaza, he noted 100,000 Palestinian have been maimed in Israeli strikes, many with amputations and other permanent disabilities. Two million Palestinians are displaced with “people enduring unspeakable pain”, Mansour said. “By ending impunity and ensuring accountability, by finally bringing to an end this terrible injustice, let your actions match your words. UNIFIL: Israeli forces crossed the Blue Line, ‘destroyed’ main base gate

The United Nations says Israeli tanks burst through the gates of its peacekeeping force base in southern Lebanon after three platoons of Israeli soldiers crossed the Blue Line.
The UN peacekeepers said in a statement at 4:30am (01:30 GMT), two Israeli army Merkava tanks “destroyed” their main gate and “forcibly entered the position” while peacekeepers were asleep.
“The tanks left about 45 minutes later after UNIFIL protested through our liaison mechanism, saying [the Israeli military] presence was putting peacekeepers in danger,” it said.
At 6:40am (03:40 GMT), peacekeepers reported several rounds being fired about 100 metres (328 feet) north of their position in what appeared to be an attack with some sort of chemical agent.
“Despite putting on protective masks, 15 peacekeepers suffered effects including skin irritation and gastrointestinal reactions after the smoke entered the camp. The peacekeepers are receiving treatment.”
The Israeli army must obey its “obligation to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property” at the Lebanon border, the force said after the latest attack.
“Breaching and entering a UN position is a further flagrant violation of international law and Security Council resolution 1701,” UNIFIL said in a statement.
Al Jazeera is covering this story from various locations. Dorsa Jabbari brings updates from the Lebanese capital, Beirut, while Nour Odeh, reporting from Amman, covers the Israeli army’s stance.

This is being carried out through large-scale violence, attacks on health infrastructure that amount to reproductive violence, “and forcing women to leave their babies behind” when Israeli troops forcefully evacuate hospitals, she noted, in addition to starving lactating mothers.
