Fishing remains the backbone of Greenland’s economy and a way of life for many communities.
However, US President Donald Trump is focused on the island’s vast, largely untapped mineral wealth, amid competition with China over rare earth supplies.
Greenland holds deposits of rare earths and metals vital for technology and military industries currently dominated by China.
Local fishermen say they value freedom, tradition and ties to Denmark over US control.
Harsh conditions and limited infrastructure mean most resources remain unexploited.
Some Greenlanders see minerals as a path to future independence, but not as a pawn in a US–China rivalry.

Ukraine peace talks: Trump sits down with European leaders at the White House

Speaking to the public alongside European leaders, the US president said it was an “honour” to convene with them at the White House, stressing that they were united in their goal of ending the war.
“We’ve had a very successful day so far, with important discussions as we work to end the killing and stop the war in Ukraine,” Trump said.
“We’re all working towards the same goal. A very simple goal: we want to stop the killing and get this settled,” he added.
At the NATO summit, Trump softened his tone towards European leaders, offering effusive praise after years of strained relations. He described NATO chief Rutte as a “great gentleman,” called the UK prime minister a “friend,” and said he liked France’s Macron “even more now.” Italy’s Meloni was hailed as an “inspiration,” while Finland’s president was complimented on his appearance. The warmest moment came with Germany’s chancellor, whom Trump jokingly asked about his “great” tan—a stark contrast to earlier tensions over trade and security. The remarks signalled a strategic pivot to diplomacy following his previous criticisms.
US envoy presses Lebanon and Israel on Hezbollah disarmament plan

US envoy Tom Barrack has returned to Beirut to broker a truce between Israel and Hezbollah, following Lebanon’s unprecedented endorsement of a disarmament plan. The proposal calls on Israel to uphold past ceasefire terms while Lebanon targets Hezbollah’s financial networks under international pressure. Though weakened by last year’s conflict, Hezbollah remains defiant, threatening escalation despite Lebanon’s push for sovereignty and economic recovery. The group’s capacity to mobilise armed factions and paralyse state institutions complicates disarmament efforts. With Israel retaining southern border positions, tensions persist as both sides face mounting diplomatic strain. Lebanon’s government walks a tightrope between averting isolation and confronting Hezbollah’s entrenched influence. The standoff marks a critical juncture in the three-decade impasse since Lebanon’s civil war.

He emphasizes that GHF has operated with questionable transparency from the start and serves political agendas rather than humanitarian needs.
Bishara suggests that Hamas’s offer to release hostages may be a tactic to pressure Trump and Netanyahu, noting that Netanyahu is increasingly isolated and losing political capital. He also points out that Trump’s shifting stance on a ceasefire signals his loss of control over the process, similar to his missteps with Russia and Ukraine.

US sanctions UN expert Albanese over Gaza reporting

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced sanctions will be imposed on UN special rapporteur for Palestine Francesca Albanese for her investigations into Israel’s war on Gaza.
“Albanese’s campaign of political and economic warfare against the United States and Israel will no longer be tolerated. We will always stand by our partners in their right to self-defence,” said Rubio.
Albanese this week hit out at countries that allowed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to fly over their airspace en route to the United States, suggesting they may have flouted their obligations under international law.
Last week, Albanese called on countries to cut off all trade and financial ties with Israel, including a full arms embargo, and withdraw international support for what she called an “economy of genocide”.
“The situation in the occupied Palestinian territory is apocalyptic,” she said. “Israel is responsible for one of the cruellest genocides in modern history.”
Albanese has repeatedly criticised Israel’s deadly 21-month attack on Gaza, and the military and political support given by its allies.

Israel’s Gaza policy echoes colonial and Nazi-era displacement: Israeli scholar

Menachem Klein, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Bar-Ilan University, told Al Jazeera that Netanyahu faces mounting pressure from both Donald Trump and his far-right coalition over a Gaza ceasefire. He said Netanyahu appears to be “buying time,” but it’s unclear how long he can delay without losing support on either side.
Klein noted the second Netanyahu-Trump meeting was unproductive, suggesting Trump is now applying real pressure for a ceasefire. He also condemned Israel’s proposed transfer of Palestinians into a “concentration zone” in Rafah, backing Israeli Holocaust historian Amos Goldberg’s use of the term “concentration camp.”
He called Israel’s actions deeply dehumanising, saying they reflect a “genocidal society” across all political spectrums in Israel. Klein added the language and operations evoke colonial and Nazi precedents. As the son of Holocaust survivors, he described Israel’s trajectory as personally painful.

Tensions are rising in Los Angeles after a large-scale operation involving federal agents, border patrol, and military personnel descended on a popular park. The show of force, which included armoured vehicles and dozens of officers, has been criticised by local officials as an attempt to intimidate immigrant communities. Mayor Karen Bass denounced the action as a deliberate effort to spread fear among the city’s diverse population. The operation comes as the Trump administration intensifies its immigration crackdown, with new funding approved for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the end of Temporary Protected Status for several nationalities. Critics argue these measures are part of a broader strategy to fulfil President Trump’s campaign promise of increasing deportations, while supporters maintain they are necessary to enforce existing immigration laws.

US President Donald Trump, speaking at the NATO summit in The Hague, hailed the Israel-Iran ceasefire as progressing ‘very well’, taking credit for Israel’s decision to abort a full-scale aerial strike. Alongside NATO’s Mark Rutte, he praised Netanyahu’s limited retaliation as ‘a great thing’, despite the Israeli PM’s claim of Iranian truce violations. Simultaneously, Trump pressured allies to boost defence spending, controversially leaking Rutte’s private notes—which addressed him as ‘Mr President, dear Donald’—pledging 5% NATO budget targets. The move underscored European anxieties over Russian aggression while exposing Trump’s transactional alliance tactics. Trump framed the de-escalation as a personal win, though Israel’s partial strike revealed lingering tensions. Rutte’s effusive messages, made public, blurred NATO’s diplomatic norms with overt flattery of Trump’s Iran policy. The dual focus on ceasefire diplomacy and spending demands highlighted Trump’s blend of crisis management and political spectacle.

Los Angeles is facing a third consecutive night of unrest following military-style immigration raids by armed, masked ICE agents that began on Friday. At least 100 people have been detained, prompting outrage from activists who say the raids aim to instil fear. Protests have escalated into violent clashes across the city, including at the 101 Freeway and the Metropolitan Detention Center, with demonstrators setting fires and destroying police vehicles, including driverless cars.
Federal agents and National Guard troops have responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, and flash-bang grenades. President Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops—without a formal request from California—calling protesters “insurrectionist mobs.” Critics, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass, say the federal response has provoked more unrest.
Authorities have declared multiple unlawful assemblies, and dozens have been arrested. As fires still burn across parts of the city, LAPD officials say they may reassess the continued deployment of the National Guard based on the scale of violence seen Sunday night.

Israel-US aid system turned Gaza into ‘human abattoir’, former UN spokesperson says
5,206 views Jun 5, 2025 #Israel #AlJazeeraEnglish #IsraelGazaWar
The Israeli-US aid operation has turned Gaza into a “human abattoir”, or slaughterhouse, former UNRWA spokesperson Chris Gunness has said, in a reference to distribution sites operated by the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).
“Hundreds of civilians are herded like animals into fenced-off pens and are slaughtered like cattle in the process,” Gunness told Al Jazeera.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation announced a full day’s closure on Wednesday, saying that operations would resume after the completion of maintenance and repair work on its distribution sites. It comes after Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinians seeking aid, killing at least 27 people and injuring about 90, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. The closure has extended into today.
The former UN official cast doubt on the reason for the suspension, saying its work had been halted “because it has rightly sparked international outrage and condemnation”.
Asked about the UN Security Council resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza that was shot down on Wednesday, Gunness said Washington’s veto showed “the complete isolation of Israel and America – not just from the rest of the Security Council, but from the rest of humanity”.
“The international community must impose economic and military sanctions immediately,” he added.

Analysts believe the UN is more prepared for Trump but acknowledge that the current geopolitical climate is more unstable than in 2017.

Rami Khouri, a distinguished fellow at the American University of Beirut, said that it was almost comical to see Biden and Trump outbid each other to claim responsibility for the Gaza ceasefire deal, while their actual behaviours were “100 percent supporting the Israeli genocide”. “Even in their announcements today they don’t really talk about the Palestinians as real people,” Khouri said, noting at the same time that US media was almost exclusively focused on the release of Israeli captives from Gaza as a result of the ceasefire. “So we see in both the presidential behaviour and the acts of the Congress, and the performance of the mass media in the United States, a reaffirmation that this is not really about justice and equality for Israelis and Palestinians,” Khouri said. “It’s about an assertion of American might and the fact the United States feels it can dictate what will happen in the region,” he said. Khouri also noted that Israel’s military had killed dozens on Wednesday despite the ceasefire announcement and they will “keep killing people until Sunday”. “This is their legacy,” he said. “They did the same thing in Lebanon before every ceasefire,” he added.

US President Joe Biden has pardoned his son Hunter, who’s been convicted of two federal felonies. Hunter Biden was found guilty of making false statements on a gun background check, as well as failing to pay taxes. He could have spent more than forty years behind bars. The President said that his son had been unfairly targeted and that his convictions were a miscarriage of justice. The decision comes just weeks before he is due to leave office.
Biden had repeatedly said that Hunter would not be pardoned. Speaking earlier this year shortly after Hunter Biden’s conviction, the US President said he would not challenge the outcome. Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna is in Washington, DC with more details. Eric Ham is a political analyst. He says that these types of pardons could undermine the credibility of the United States around the world.
